Machaerus

Explore the Echoes of History and Spirituality

In the rich tapestry of religious and historical narratives woven across present-day Jordan, one captivating destination stands out: Machaerus, also affectionately known as "Mukawir." Perched atop a hill with commanding views of Jordan's Dead Sea—the lowest point on Earth—Machaerus is more than just an archaeological site; it's a fortified palace steeped in ancient intrigue.

The Jewish-Roman historian Flavius Josephus,  Machaerus serves as the haunting backdrop to the imprisonment and subsequent execution of John the Baptist. According to biblical accounts (Mark 6:24; Matthew 14:8), this solemn event unfolded circa 32 CE, mere moments before Passover, following a two-year period of captivity.
