Bethany Beyond the Jordan

Step into Sacred Waters

The Baptism Site, known as "Bethany beyond the Jordan" (Al-Maghtas), lies within the Jordan Valley, situated to the north of the Dead Sea. This site encompasses two distinct archaeological zones: Tell el-Kharrar, also referred to as Jabal Mar Elias, and the vicinity of the Churches of St. John the Baptist. Widely revered across various Christian denominations, "Bethany beyond the Jordan" holds immense religious significance, being recognized as the place where John the Baptist baptized Jesus of Nazareth. This association has attracted monks, hermits, pilgrims, and priests throughout the ages, leaving behind evidence of their devout practices and religious endeavors dating from the 4th to the 15th century CE. Today, the site has regained popularity as a pilgrimage destination for Christians, who continue to participate in baptism ceremonies on its grounds.
