RJ marks 48th anniversary

Dec 14, 2011 - Amman

During its five-decade-old history, the airline attained numerous achievements, most prominent among them expanding the route network and modernizing its fleet. It also strived to offer the latest, and best, in air transport industry services — commercial, IT, engineering and maintenance — attaining international recognition after becoming a member in oneworld alliance in 2007, joining big names in the airline business.

The remarkable progress of the airline since its establishment is all the more obvious when comparing the financial and operational results in 1964 to those expected at the end of 2011: the number of carried passengers increased from 87,000 in 1964 to more than 3.2 million in 2011 and the number of yearly flights from 4,193 to 39,400. RJ used to operate two aircraft flying to three destinations; now the fleet counts 32 modern aircraft flying to 60 cities spread over four continents.

Revenues increased from JD1 million at the end of 1964 to this year's expected JD682million. This reflects an increase of employee productivity from JD4, 000 in 1964 to JD148, 000 in 2011.

RJ President/CEO Hussein Dabbas said on this occasion that the airline’s history is full of great accomplishments achieved through the royal guidance that RJ has received over the past five decades from their majesties King Hussein and King Abdullah II, assuring that the company’s qualified and trained employees could, over the years, interpret their majesties’ vision of what the national carrier of Jordan should be: a modern, developed airline, capable of reflecting the bright image of the country to the world.

Dabbas expressed Royal Jordanian’s pride in the vital role the company plays in connecting Jordan and the region with the rest of the world, and its ongoing efforts in being Jordan’s ambassador in the countries it reaches.

He also pointed out that RJ has set a new strategic plan over the past year that aims to boost and promote its services in different fields. The most prominent feature of the plan was renewing the fleet, expanding the route network, increasing the frequencies, improving ground and in-flight services, in addition to increasing the timeliness of the flight departure and arrival schedules. This plan goes in parallel with the transformation process of the company into a public shareholding company. Most of its shares are owned by the Jordanian private sector.

Royal Jordanian won many world-class awards in the field of air transport. In 2010, Royal Jordanian won the Airline of the Year 2010 Award at the Arabian Business Achievement Awards 2010.
