oneworld is best alliance for on-time flights – for fifth year running

Jan 10, 2018

Tuesday, 10 January 2018- oneworld® is the best alliance for on-time flights, according to FlightGlobal Incorporating FlightStats, the leading airline industry data services and solutions technology company, which yesterday honoured oneworld with its Airline Alliance On-Time Performance Service (OPS) Award for 2017.

It is the fifth time running that oneworld has been confirmed by FlightStats as the most punctual global airline alliance – which means oneworld has retained this premier on-time status since FlightGlobal’s FlightStats started tracking alliance punctuality.

This latest honour means that oneworld is now the current holder of six “best airline alliance” awards internationally – twice as many as both other global airline alliances combined.

The award is based on its analysis of 36 million flights operated by hundreds of airlines globally in the past year – which showed that oneworld members collectively maintained a more punctual operation across the 12 months than their counterparts in the other global airline groups.

FlightGlobal’s FlightStats’ study of the 4.6 million oneworld flights in 2017 - operated by the alliance's 13 member airlines and their 30 affiliated carriers, serving more than 1,000 destinations in 150 plus countries - showed 82.50 per cent of them departed on time, a 4 point better performance than either other global alliance.

oneworld member airlines collectively also achieved the best arrival punctuality in 2017, with 80.77 per cent of them landing on-time, a 2.5 point improvement on either competitor global alliance.

oneworld members also took top honours FlightGlobal’s FlightStats’ 2017 awards for individual airlines.

Iberia retained its position as the world’s most punctual international airline network, with 88.97 per cent of its 159,610 network flights arriving on time – narrowly ahead of 2015’s winner and 2016’s runner-up Japan Airlines, with 86.09 per cent of its 289,106 flights landing on schedule.

Three other oneworld members also made it to the world’s Top 10 airline network list – Qatar Airways (5th), Qantas (7th) and LATAM Airlines Brazil (10th) – giving oneworld five of the world’s 10 most punctual airline networks.

Looking at mainline flights only, American Airlines also featured strongly, as eighth most punctual airlines globally.

oneworld member airlines were also the most punctual in three of the five regions analysed by FlightGlobal’s FlightStats – with Iberia putting in the best on-time performance among European airlines, Japan Airlines in Asia-Pacific, and Qatar Airways in Middle East and Africa.

Iberia Express, the Spanish airline’s regional subsidiary, which is a oneworld affiliate member, was the world’s most punctual low-cost carrier.

FlightGlobal Incorporating FlightStats says its awards are “designed to recognise the hard work of the airlines that demonstrate consistently high performance and deliver on their promise to get passengers to their destinations on-time”.  It curates the data from over 600 global sources, including airline direct operational data feeds, airline data via the world’s largest Global Distribution Systems (GDSs), civil aviation authorities, airports, positional data feeds and other third-party aggregators.  For full details, see flightstats.com

Other “best airline alliance” awards currently held by oneworld include:

  • Business Traveller UK’s 2017 Best Airline Alliance for the fifth year running.
